Immersion suits for the additional life raft

The stored position of the additional life raft required by SOLAS Reg.III/31.1.4 has been included in the "work stations" mentioned in SOLAS Reg.III/32.3.3 by Res.MSC216(82). Steel coil loading methods of existing dry cargo ships

Loading methods for steel coils carried by dry cargo vessels, i.e. weight, size, tiers, and number of dunnages, have been verified with regards to the concentrated forces affecting inner bottoms and summarized in the onboard loading manual. The Bahamas Maritime Authority has notified ClassNK of the instruction regarding servicing intervals of life-saving appliances on board the Bahamas flagged vessels by BMA INFORMATION BULLETIN No.98. According to Chapter III of SOLAS, inflatable liferafts, inflatable lifejackets, marine evacuation systems, inflated rescue boats and hydrostatic release units shall be serviced at intervals not exceeding 12 months. On 22 May 2006, while at anchor in the Bay of Sept Iles, Canada, lifeboat drill was carried out on board the bulk carrier. During the recovery of lifeboat, the lifeboat fell in the accident. At present, Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) are investigating the lifeboat accident and has released a Marine Safety Advisory letter concerning the release gear mechanism, type SRS-37. Moreover the manufacturer of the lifeboat, Shigi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. published the safety guidance for the release gear mechanism as attached. For Malaysian ships other than bulk carriers, which are constantly engaged on voyages in warm climates between Latitude 30 degrees North and 30 degrees South may be exempted from the installation of immersion suits according to 32.3.2 Chapter III SOLAS. Malaysian Government authorizes ClassNK to issue an exemption certificate from that regulation. IACS UI SC213 has been established as an interpretation of SOLAS Reg.III/31.1.4, III/7.2.1.2, III/11.4, III/11.7 and III/16.7 on August 2006. As informed previously by ClassNK Technical Information No. TEC-0494 and TEC-0545, Annex IV of MARPOL 73/78 (Regulations for the prevention of pollution by sewage from ships) entered into force on 27 September 2003 and was revised on 1 August 2005. The existing ships defined by the annex, whose date of building contract is before 27 September 2003, should obtain the International Sewage Pollution Prevention (ISPP) certificate by 26 September 2008. It is required to complete the plan approval at ClassNK Machinery Department and carry out the initial survey in order to obtain the certificate. You are kindly requested to take into account the obtaining of the certificate by the effective date. The plan approval for a lot of ships has not been completed yet.
