Conformity Assessment/Certification under EC Marine Equipment Directive
It has already been informed by NK Technical Information No.323 of 30th July 1999 that the Society has started to offer the service for conformity assessment/certification under EC Marine Equipment Directive (MED).
In this connection, we are pleased to inform you that the service for conformity assessment/certification the Society can offer has been expanded to cover for the equipment prescribed in the attached list since 1st January 2000 in addition to those listed in NK Technical Information No.323. Thus, upon request, the Society will be pleased to offer its service for conformity assessment/certification for all the items of life-saving appliances, marine-pollution prevention and fire protection listed in Annex A of MED.
NK Technical Information No.323 should be revoked accordingly.

Supplementary Note
Council Directive 96/98/EC on marine equipment, as amended by Commission Directive 98/85/EC is implemented by fifteen EU Member States, and Norway and Iceland (Note 1).
In pursuance of the Directive, the equipment, if placed on board ships for which safety certificates are issued by or on behalf of these states, or if replaced, on or after 1 January 1999, shall be manufactured in accordance with the Directive, and shall be affixed with the "wheel mark". The equipment manufactured before 1st January 1999 may however be placed on board during two years from that date subject to the conditions specified.
The approval of Nippon Kaiji Kyokai - NKK Rotterdam by the Netherlands Government as "Notified Body" on 15th June 1999 has led the Society to start to offer the service for conformity assessment/certification for the relevant equipment. The equipment the society can do conformity assessment/certification have now been expanded since 1st January 2000, and cover all of the equipment related to life-saving appliances, marine-pollution prevention and fire protection listed in Annex A of the Directive.
The equipment, including those for which the Society can do conformity assessment/certification since 1st January 2000, are shown in table -a, -b and -c. The tables also indicate the modules applicable to the equipment. For the equipment for which more than one module set (I.e., B+D, B+E, etc.) are permitted in the tables, the manufacturer may choose one of the module sets.
Manufacturers who wish to apply for the conformity assessment/certification for their equipment are requested to submit the completed application with the relevant documents to Material and Equipment Department of the head office of Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (TEL:+81-3-5226-2020, FAX:+81-3-5226-2019), or to Nippon Kaiji Kyokai - NKK Rotterdam, Mauritsweg 23, 3012 Jr, Rotterdam, the Netherlands (TEL:+31-10-413-7071, FAX: +31-10-413-8530). A blank form of application is attached hereto for your use.
