Reference is made to NK Technical Information No.134 (issued at 10 Appril 1994), by which it is informed that as a scheme of phasing-in GMDSS apparatusradio life-saving apparatus for survival craft are to be replaced by two-way VHF radiotelephone apparatus and radar transponders. All the necessary arrangements are believed to be taken for installation of these apparatus.


The two-way VHF radiotelephone apparatus need not be of intrinsically safe type so long as these apparatus are used as designed by the SOLAS convention.
To the knowledge of the Society, there are no intrinsically safe two-way VHF radiotelephone apparatus type-approved by NK or by the Administrations.

These apparatus may be used for on board communications for other purposes than those as designed subject to compliance with channel and output power requirements.

In order to prevent these apparatus of not intrinsically safe type being used in the cargo areas on board such ships as oil tankers, chemical tankers, gas carriers, ships carrying motor vehicles with fuel in their tanks, coal carriers and ships of any other kinds carrying flammable cargoes, to communicate on radio for other purposes than those as designed, eg, communications related to cargo works, it has been decided by NK that the following caution notice should be put on each of the apparatus which are not of approved intrinsically safe type. The necessary arrangements are recommended to be made accordingly.
