Helicopter facilities onboard ships sailing in Australian waters

Tec No.: TEC- 984 (358kb)

Contact:

Issued:8 Apr 2014

"MARINE ORDERS Part 57 Helicopter operations Issue 3 (hereinafter referred to as MO57)" was issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (hereinafter referred to as AMSA) for Helicopter facilities onboard ships sailing in Australian waters.
After the issuance of MO57, helicopter facilities are to comply with MO57 instead of "Australian Code of Safe Practice for Ship-Helicopter Transfers", which was notified in ClassNK Technical Information No. TEC-0762.
Consequently, this ClassNK Technical Information supersedes the previous ClassNK Technical Information No. TEC-0762.

In addition, fire-fighting equipment for helicopter facilities are required to comply with the "Guide to Helicopter/Ship Operations, 4th Edition (hereinafter referred to as ICS Guide)" issued by the International Chamber of Shipping.
Also, according to "Helicopter Operations, Frequently asked questions", which is an interpretation of MO57 and issued by AMSA, "Vessels that comply with their SOLAS responsibilities will be able to comply with the requirements of section 4.7 of the ICS Guide". Thus, it is not necessary to prepare additional fire-fighting equipment beyond those required by SOLAS and the Rules of ClassNK.
However, the following requirements should be given continuous attention.

[Strength of the Helicopter Landing Site]
The strength of the Helicopter Landing Site (hereinafter referred to as HSL) is required to comply with MO57. The strength of the HLS for the vessel is to be confirmed by the following documents.
1. Maximum designed load for helicopter landing of HLS described in the structural drawings such as hatch cover, upper deck, etc.
2. Strength confirmation letter by HLS designer (shipyard, hatch cover maker, etc.) or the flag State.
3. Strength confirmation letter issued by ClassNK in case that neither item 1 nor 2 above are available.

In order to issue the letter under 3 above, the structural drawing of the HLS is to be submitted to ClassNK.
