Fire extinguishing arrangement for paint and flammable liquid lockers on Marshall Islands flagged vessels
The Government of the Republic of Marshall Islands has noticed ClassNK of the special requirements for fire extinguishing arrangement for paint and flammable liquid lockers on Marshall Islands flagged vessels (Marine Notice No. 2-011-6 Rev. 2023).
This Technical Information supersedes the previous ClassNK Technical Information No.TEC-0506 dated 10 March 2003.
Depending on the area of the deck, paint and flammable liquid lockers should be provided with the following fire extinguishing system or portable fire extinguisher.
1. Existing vessels with keel laid before 1 February 1992
(1) Lockers of 10m2 or less in deck area – one portable fire extinguisher* should be located outside the entrance to the space.
(2) Lockers greater than 10m2, but not greater than 20m2 in deck area – two portable fire extinguishers* should be located outside the entrance to the space.
(3) Lockers greater than 20m2 in deck area – a suitable fixed fire extinguishing system as given in below should be provided.
(i) CO2 system, designed for at least 40% of the gross volume of the space
(ii) Dry powder system, designed for at least 0.5kg/m3 of the gross volume of the space
(iii) Water spraying system, designed for at least 5 liter/m2 of deck area/min
2. Existing vessels with keel laid on or after 1 February 1992 and before 1 February 1998
(1) Lockers of 10m2 or less in deck area – one portable fire extinguisher* should be located outside the entrance to the space.
(2) Lockers greater than 10m2 in deck area – a suitable fixed fire extinguishing system as given in 1.(3) should be provided.
3. Existing vessels with keel laid on or after 1 February 1998 and before 1 July 2002
(1) Lockers of 4m2 or less in deck area – one portable fire extinguisher* should be located outside the entrance to the space.
(2) Lockers greater than 4m2 in deck area – a suitable fixed fire extinguishing system as given in 1.(3) should be provided.
