Title:
ClassNK releases Guidelines for Use of Highly Ductile Steel

24 September 2020

Tokyo – Leading Classification Society ClassNK released its “Guidelines for Use of Highly Ductile Steel” which summarize the requirements for using highly ductile steel on hull structures.

Highly ductile steel is a steel material with improved ductility that ensures the same strength and toughness as conventional steel. It absorbs more collision energy than conventional steel, and by applying it to hull structures, damage during collisions and groundings can be reduced. Improved ductility is also effective in preventing fracturing, and it is expected to ensure safety during flooding.

Aware of the potential of highly ductile steel in improving ship safety, ClassNK has been involved in R&D related to its application (*1) and has classed ships that actually use it. For the further utilization of highly ductile steel in the industry, ClassNK has compiled the procedures for class notations for ships applying highly ductile steel as well as its manufacturing and welding requirements into the guidelines.

The guidelines are available to download free of charge via ClassNK’s website www.classnk.com for those who have registered for the ClassNK “My Page” service. To register for the “My Page” service, go to the ClassNK website www.classnk.com and click on the “My Page Login” button.
